In the face of alarming findings from the Global Carbon Project's 2023 Annual Report, Kankyō, as an eco-friendly company deeply committed to sustainability, feels an increasing responsibility to address the urgent need for global action against rising carbon emissions. The report, published in the journal Earth System Science Data, reveals that global carbon emissions from fossil fuels have reached record levels, emphasizing the dire need for immediate and substantial efforts to curb climate change.

The Current State of Carbon Emissions

The Global Carbon Budget for 2023 projects fossil carbon dioxide emissions to be 36.8 billion metric tons, a 1.1% increase from 2022. While some regions like Europe and the U.S. are experiencing a decline in emissions, the overall global trend is upward. The report highlights the inadequacy of current measures to cut fossil fuel usage, underscoring the looming threat of dangerous climate change.

Land-use change, such as deforestation, is contributing to emissions, with projections indicating a slight decrease. However, these reductions are insufficient to counterbalance current levels of deforestation and the establishment of new forests, presenting a significant challenge.

Global Climate Targets in Jeopardy

The report forecasts that total global CO2 emissions, considering both fossil fuel and land-use change, will be 40.9 billion metric tons in 2023—similar to 2022 levels. This stagnation is part of a 10-year plateau, indicating a lack of significant progress towards the steep emission reductions necessary to meet global climate targets.

"The impacts of climate change are evident all around us, but action to reduce carbon emissions from fossil fuels remains painfully slow," remarks Professor Pierre Friedlingstein of Exeter's Global Systems Institute, who led the study. The study suggests an inevitable overshooting of the 1.5°C target set by the Paris Agreement, emphasizing the critical need for rapid cuts in fossil fuel emissions.

Countdown to 1.5°C Global Warming

The study estimates a 50% chance of consistently exceeding the 1.5°C target in about seven years at the current emissions level. While subject to uncertainties, this projection underscores the urgency of addressing the remaining carbon budget to avoid the worst impacts of climate change.

Kankyō's Call to Action
